American Eskimos - Origin

American Eskimos are believed to have originated from Spitz dogs bred by the Germans who introduced the dog to the United States. Spitz-type dogs are an ancient group of breeds characterized by a pointed muzzle, erect ears, and a dense coat that is usually light in color. They are said to have served as working dogs and were probably the first to accompany humans in their daily activities. There are many archeological items that prove the Spitz family is one of the oldest canine groups.

The ancestors of the American Eskimo dogs made their way to the United States thanks to a German couple. The Halls brought their dogs to the country in 1913 and popularized the breed. Though there were a number of spitz dogs in the country before that time, the Halls can be referred to as the founders of the breed in the United States. Their kennel name ("American Eskimo") was adopted as the breed name.

American Eskimos - Recognition

The breed received UKC recognition in 1913. However, breeders and owners registered their dogs as German Spitzes accepting the name used in the breed's motherland. In 1917, the breed was renamed. It may be that the name alteration was the result of dislike for everything German connected with World War I.

Breed numbers in the United States were relatively low until the North American Eskimo Association was formed in 1969. In 1985, the American Eskimo Club of America was established to promote the breed and receive AKC breed recognition. The members of the organization were very persistent in their efforts. Work aimed at the improvement and popularization of American Eskimos provided for AKC recognition in 1995.
