American Eskimos are non-sporting dogs according to the AKC. The breed received AKC recognition in 1995, which marked a new stage in the history of the breed. From that time on, breeders of American Eskimos have been breeding their dogs according to the official AKC standard.

American Eskimos - Appearance

The American Eskimo dog comes in three sizes. They are Standard, Miniature, and Toy American Eskimos. Standard American Eskimos reach the height of about 15-19 inches. A smaller breed version stands from 12 to 15 inches at the shoulder, while the Toy version is about 9-12 inches. All three types of the American Eskimo should be well balanced with good substance and proportion.

American Eskimos are often compared with other spitz-type dogs. Since they are the descendants of spitz dogs bred by the Germans, they display some characteristics common to all spitz-type dogs. American Eskimos have a pointed muzzle with a slightly wedged head. The eyes are set apart and have an expression of intelligence and curiosity. The eye color is usually dark. Dogs with blue eyes are disqualified from a show ring. The ears are triangular and erect. American Eskimos have a pincer or scissors bite.

American Eskimos - Coat

American Eskimos are fluffy dogs. It is a characteristic feature of the breed. The breed has a double coat with a dense undercoat and a longer stand-off outer coat. The coat color is usually white. Biscuit white coloring is also possible. The American Eskimo does shed. However, shedding is average and can be handled by regular brushing. No trimming is needed.

American Eskimos - Is it a Breed for You?

American Eskimos are protective and devoted dogs. They can be used as watchdogs, yet make poor guardians. Overall, they are friendly with strangers and other pets. Children find pleasure in playing with these dogs. American Eskimos are very sociable and need contact with people. Hence, it is recommended to keep them indoors. An apartment will do. American Eskimos do not need much exercise and do well with a few short walks a day. Breed owners admit that American Eskimos are happiest in a fenced yard.
