American Eskimos are non-sporting dogs according to the AKC. The breed received AKC recognition in 1995, which marked a new stage in the history of the breed. From that time on, breeders of American Eskimos have been breeding their dogs according to the official AKC standard. American Eskimos - Appearance
The American Eskimo dog comes in three sizes. They are Standard, Miniature, and Toy American Eskimos. Standard American Eskimos reach the height of about 15-19 inches. A smaller breed version stands from 12 to 15 inches at the shoulder, while the Toy version is about 9-12 inches. All three types of the American Eskimo should be well balanced with good substance and proportion.
American Eskimos are often compared with other spitz-type dogs. Since they are the descendants of spitz dogs bred by the Germans, they display some characteristics common to all spitz-type dogs. American Eskimos have a pointed muzzle with a slightly wedged head. The eyes are set apart and have an expression of intelligence and curiosity. The eye color is usually dark. Dogs with blue eyes are disqualified from a show ring. The ears are triangular and erect. American Eskimos have a pincer or scissors bite.
